Because tutoring relationships depend on consistency and trust, reliability is one of the most important qualities we look for in every applicant.

For most elementary and secondary tutoring positions, applicants must hold a valid New York State teaching certification.

For college-level tutoring and certain specialized positions, applicants must have a college degree or be actively pursuing a degree in the subject area they wish to teach.

Depending on the position, preferred qualifications may include:

• New York State teaching certification
• Classroom or tutoring experience
• Special education experience
• Strong subject-area knowledge
• Experience preparing students for Regents, SAT, ACT, or GED exams
• Familiarity with current New York State curriculum and standards
• Comfort using virtual learning platforms
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

All applicants must complete our screening and hiring requirements before receiving a tutoring assignment.

Strong tutors explain concepts in a way students can understand. They also communicate professionally and reliably with families, school personnel when applicable, and the Reach for the Stars Tutoring administrative team.

Students may need concepts explained more than once or presented in a different way. Our tutors remain calm, encouraging, and sensitive to each learner’s challenges.

Every student learns differently. Tutors must be willing to adjust their teaching style, pace, materials, and strategies based on the student’s needs and progress.

Tutors should have a thorough understanding of the subjects they teach and be able to break complex material into clear, manageable steps.

Students and families depend on tutors to maintain a consistent schedule. Punctuality, preparation, responsiveness, and accurate communication are essential.

Tutors must be able to plan productive sessions, manage time effectively, monitor student progress, and complete required documentation promptly.

Virtual tutors should be comfortable using video-conferencing platforms, digital learning tools, shared documents, email, and other online educational resources.

Our tutors recognize that success is not measured only by grades. They help students develop confidence, independence, stronger habits, and a more positive relationship with learning.
